Notepad, pen, Die Hard on DVD: the best screenwriting course in the world. Yours for less than a tenner. Seriously, the combination of structure, pacing, dialogue and characterisation in that film is about as close to perfection as you can get.
“Orpheus went leaping through the fields / Strumming as hard as he did please / Birdies detonated in the sky / Bunnies dashed their brains out on the trees”—The Lyre of Orpheus, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
“I suppose the thing I’d most like to have known or been reassured about [when I was 18] is that in the world what counts more than talent, what counts more than energy or concentration or commitment or anything else is kindness. And the more in the world you encounter kindness and cheerfulness, which is its kind of amiable uncle or aunt, just the better the world always is. And all the big words – virtue, justice, truth – are dwarfed by the greatness of kindness.”—Stephen Fry (via Dan)
As you may or may not know, I’m one of the ‘growing group of young designers and vagabonds’ posting at FormFiftyFive, one of the best sites out there for design inspiration, reviews and vacancies. Although I’ve been a bit quiet of the FFF front recently, as I gradually steer Swiss Cheese and Bullets away from being about other people’s work and more towards being about my own, I’ll be posting lots more stuff on there soon. All of my previous posts are collected here.
And that pic up there? It’s from my latest FFF post, regarding the disconcerting photography of one Federico Carbrera.
